VINTAGE RUSSIAN PAINTER EDWARD GAVRILOV 1932-2000 Oil on Canvas
Eddik Gavrilov was born in a small town near the Siberian city of Vladivostok. After the usual schooling his interest turned to art and painting. A talented young man, he was accepted at the L'Academie du Arts in Leningrad. Later when he graduated from the Academy in 1962 he continued his studies at the Repin Academy of Arts. Constant pressure and censure from the Russian authorities concerning the subject matter of his paintings disturbed him to such a degree that he decided, with a friend, to seek freedom in Turkey. After eight terrifying days in which the young men almost lost their lives, having run-out of food and water, they reached Turkey and asked for asylum and received it. In 1968 Gavrilov reached the United States and sought help from The Tolstoy Foundation in Nyack, NY. There he met The Russian Countess Vera Buxhoeveden who was impressed by his talent and sponsored him, introducing him to people of wealth and importance. After the death of the Countess Mrs. J. Russell Maguire, a close friend of the Countess, decided to sponsor Gavrilov and he moved to Greenwich Ct. Although living in Greenwich and painting portraits of many of the residents he also had a large following in Southampton and Newport where he painted the portraits of Mr. and Mrs. James Van Allen and John Nicholas Brown. A quick decisive painter, he was known to do a portrait bust in two hours. Gavrilov was a great admirer of John Singer Sargeant and Nicolai Fechin, the great Russian painter. Both were known for their brilliant brush work which Gavrilov emulates. Gavrilov continued a full life career doing self portraits and landscapes onsite and at his home in Haverstraw, NY and his continued passion for Surrealism and the unknown paintings
