Rare 1960 Copy Of Canada's Bill Of Rights .
In 1960, the Canadian government of John Diefenbaker enacted the Canadian Bill of Rights, which was the country's first federal law to protect human rights and fundamental freedoms. The Bill of Rights only applied to federal laws and government actions, and recognized the following rights for individuals:
Freedom of assembly and association
Legal rights, such as the right to counsel and a fair hearing
In 1982, the Canadian Bill of Rights was replaced by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which protects a wider range of rights, including:
Fundamental freedoms, such as freedom of conscience and religion, freedom of thought, belief, opinion, and expression, and freedom of peaceful assembly
Democratic rights
Mobility rights
Equality rights, which guarantee that everyone is equal and has the right to equal protection and equal benefit of the law, without discrimination
Language rights
The 1960 federal Bill of Rights, which purported to empower judges to veto legislation that violated fundamental freedoms such as free speech or due process
