Vintage Mid-Century hand Carved Chinese Camphor Wood Box
In the 18th and 19th century, chests made from naturally fragrant camphor wood were primarily used to transport tea, porcelain, and silks from China to Europe. Prior to their use in sea trade, camphor chests were used in Chinese households as storage units for objects such as blankets and linens. They function to keep insects away, much as cedar chests do in the US. This hand carved box is a smaller version, perhaps 70 years old, with no damage to the carving. The brass hardware is designed to accommodate a Chinese bar lock, not included. This is a sturdy piece with no looseness or wobble.
This beautifully camphor wood box measures 8 x 4 x 4.25 inches and weighs 2 pounds.
No damges. Great Condition.
