When I began drawing “Life in Hell” exactly 500 weeks ago, I compiled a list of “forbidden words”–catch phrases, cliches, slang, Republican doublespeak, buzzwords–that bugged me. Amazingly enough, although I forbade their use, people kept saying and writing those words. But I haven’t given up. Recently I compiled a new list of “Forbidden Words of the 1990s,” printing it in recent installments of “Life in Hell.” I figured I’d done my linguistic duty for the next decade. But late at night, lying in bed, staring into darkness, I keep coming up with more words to forbid–“extravaganza,” “porno,” “crack is wack,” etc. Here, then, are the uncensored “Forbidden Words” leftovers (including all the filthy stuff I wouldn’t stick in the comic strip), along with a few new words I thought of while making up this list. Please do not read the following aloud.
Life in Hell is a weekly comic strip by Matt Groening. The strip features anthropomorphic rabbits and a pair of gay lovers. Groening uses these characters to explore a wide range of topics about love, sex, work, and death. His drawings are full of expressions of angst, alienation, self-loathing, and fear of inevitable doom
