Kilauea Point Light Station stands on the rocky promontory of Point Kilauea, projecting from the northern headlands of Kauai, Hawaii’s north western-most island. “Kilauea” is said to mean in Hawaiian, “rising vapor cloud,” an appellation derived from clouds of sea mist that sometimes hang over Kauai’s north coast. The Kilauea Point Light Station is nationally significant not only for its association with the evolution of trans-oceanic commerce, but also for its retention of unique architectural characteristics representative of the U.S. maritime tradition in the early twentieth century.
